When: Saturday, May 25
Time: 1:30pm for a 2pm start
Where: Brown’s Store, Longford (IGA Supermarket building). Please gather in the coffee shop area at the entrance to the store ready for the start of the tour at 2 pm.
Australian supermarkets are not generally models of sustainability. The buildings are generally not designed to be energy efficient, there is usually a total reliance on artificial lighting, and the extensive refrigeration facilities use large amounts of electricity. Large amounts of waste are generated by the operations of the supermarket. When Laurie Reiner set out to plan, design, build, equip and operate his existing IGA supermarket business in Longford at a new, larger site he was determined to not finish up with a run-of-the-mill typical Australian supermarket. Laurie will share the process he went through to create the most sustainable supermarket he could, and he will then take us on a tour of the supermarket to show us how it has worked in practice.
Laurie will provide refreshments at the conclusion of the tour, which will be followed by the Tas North Branch Annual Meeting.
Call for Committee Members
The Tas North Branch meetings have been a great place to learn, to meet other people interested in sustainability and to exchange information. We want to continue to grow this but it can only be achieved through the active involvement of local members.
The Annual Meeting is where we will elect the Branch Committee for the coming year. We are therefore calling for any people interested in being a part of the Committee for the next twelve months to nominate.
There are from six to nine positions available on the ATA Tas North Branch Committee of Management. Committee members are drawn from the local ATA membership and have the opportunity to represent members’ views on topic selection for meetings and matters specific to the Tas North ATA membership. Committee members are expected to attend branch meetings and Committee meetings, which are held at most monthly. Attendance at Committee meetings can be via Skype, thus allowing members who live outside Launceston to participate.
Convenor – is the main local contact, organises and chairs meetings, organises branch activities, retains some branch assets and equipment.
Treasurer – collects monies, forwards them on to ATA’s national office and maintains records (most of the main bookwork is performed at the national ATA office).
Secretary – assists the convenor and the committee members with meeting planning and branch activities.
Webpage Administrator – updates the branch webpage with meeting details and other branch activities.
Committee members (2 to 5 positions available) – assist with organising meetings and branch activities.
Nominations: As you can see the responsibilities are not great and don’t forget that this is all about having fun! If you feel that you can handle this and would like to see the branch continue, we would like to hear from you. To nominate (or if you would like some more information) just email your name, ATA membership number and the position you are interested in to David Hamilton at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 0419 354 760.
The format for the afternoon will be:
• 2pm to 3pm – tour of Brown’s Store
• 3pm – tea and coffee available in the meeting room
• 3:15 pm to 4pm – Annual Meeting, click here for the agenda.
