Presenter: Richard Keech, Beyond Zero Emissions and author of 'The Energy Freedom Home'
Melbourne-based NGO Beyond Zero Emissions (BZE) has tried to take the message of their Zero-Carbon Australia reports to the home DIY audience with the Energy Freedom Project which has since turned into a book. This presentation investigates BZE's way of framing the message of home energy efficiency improvements for the average homeowner.
The Energy Freedom story takes a holistic view of home energy by considering energy efficiency, energy usage patterns and renewable energy generation together.
The presentation will discuss the following;
- draught exclusion
- widow upgrades and more...
- heat pump systems
- cooking appliances and more...
- when to turn on the water heater
- when to turn on the washing machine
- when to turn on room heating/cooling and more...
Along with these topics, the benefits resulting from installing a renewable energy system will be discussed (notably PV) to encourage everyone to take a similar holistic view when planning their own upgrades. It is a very practical analysis of what to do to improve your home, save money and reduce carbon emissions; it also explains the importance of rejecting gas as a home energy source.
Richard Keech wrote the book 'The Energy Freedom Home' for BZE and was a lead researcher of the Zero Carbon Australia Buildings Plan. Richard now works as a home sustainability assessor.
Regards, Peter and the Melbourne branch committee.
